Woman at a Pond PDF Digital Downlad
Ten various alphabets adorn this unique unfinished sampler at the bottom of which a lone woman sits serenely in a long work dress with an apron. She grasps a hoop, perhaps her needlework or quilting, and gazes at a pond where two quacking ducks keep her company. Hemstitched and pieced together perhaps due to a shortage of available linen, the stitcher did exquisitely fine work with silks on 46 count linen over two threads. Sadly she left her sampler unfinished, with no name, place or date to identify her.
Stitching Notes: all stitches are worked in cross stitch over two threads of linen.
Provenance: Since the sampler has no name, no date, nor place it is impossible to determine its origins. However, the style, multiple alphabets, and types of motifs place it circa 1810s-1850s.
