Month #5 Elizabeth Chesters 1843, a Mother Daughter Duet of Antique Reproduction Samplers
These two samplers, so very similar in design and motifs, must have been done by relatives, sharing not only the same last name and year stitched but also the same pattern, thread and linen colors.
At first thinking they perhaps were sisters, a search revealed the discovery that they most probably were mother and daughter. The mottos chosen on each are reflectively appropriate sentiments for a mother and child. It is a cheery thought to envision the pair stitching together, the daughter learning in imitation alongside her mum, while being given the freedom of her own creative expression.
